Book Reccomendation--Intimacy with Jesus by: Hudson Taylor

I just finished an excellent book "Intimacy with Jesus" by Hudson Taylor. I would highly suggest it! It's a quick read about understanding the Song of Solomon with so many little golden nuggets of truth packed in there!

Some of my favorite quotes from the book include:

"The real secret of an unsatisfied life lies too often in an unsurrendered will. How foolish, how wrong, this is! Do we think we are wiser than God? Or that our love for ourselves is better than His? Or that we know ourselves better than He does? How our distrust must grieve and wound all over again the tender heart of the One who became the Man of Sorrows for us!"

"A word about your morning quite time. No time is so well spent as an early hour given to Jesus alone. Do you give enough attention to this hour? If possible, it should be your priority. Nothing can make up for it. We must take time to be holy!"

"When we bring our questions to God, don't we sometimes go on, offering some other request? Or maybe we leave without waiting for His answers? Doesn't this show how little we expect an answer, how little we desire one? Would we like to be treated that way? Waiting quietly before God would save us from many mistakes and sorrows."

"If we worry about others' souls but neglect our own, if we seek to remove the speck of sawdust from our brother's eye and forget about the plank in our own, we will be disappointed by our own powerlessness to help others. Our Master will be just as disappointed in us. "

"As long as self-will and disunity exist in the church, we can see why the world still belongs to the wicked one, and why unreached nations are barely touched with the gospel."

"If we want to be soul winners and build up the church, His temple, let us make a note of this--not by discussion or argument, but by lifting Him up we will draw men to Christ."

"A runner in a race doesn't have to turn back in order to miss the prize. How often the enemy succeeds, one way or another, in tempting the believer away from complete dedication to Christ! The fullness of His power and love can only be experienced in complete dedication."

"We have to make a choice. We can't enjoy both the world and Christ."

"How many little foxes there are in our lives! Little compromises with the world; disobedience to the still small voice in little things; little indulgences of the flesh that make us neglect duty; doing evil in little things that good may come; and the beauty and they fruitfulness of the vine are sacrificed!"

"May the joy of our fellowship lead to companionship in ministry. May it result in being everything for Jesus, ready for any experience that equips us for further service. May we surrender everything to Him, and be willing to minister all for Him. There is no room for love of the world here because oneness with Christ fills the heart. There is nothing left to use for wordly pleasures, because everything has been locked up and kept for the Master's use."

"How sad that we delight in conferences and conventions, and feast on all the good things set before us, and yet aren't ready to go out in self denial to rescue the lost. How sad to rest on faith while forgetting to fight the good fight of faith, to think about the cleansing and purity that faith brings while neglecting the souls struggling in the mire of sin. If we can take out coat off when He wants us keep it on, and rest our feet while he is wander alone on the mountains, isn't that a sign that we have lost fellowship with our Lord?"

"Don't we, all too often, make the best plans we can and carry them out to the best of our ability? And the whole time, we feel a great burden of responsibility, and earnestly ask the Lord to help us? But if we let Him always teach us, and leave the responsibility with Him, worry won't exhaust our strength. Instead, our strength will be available to him to accomplish His goal."

"I {Hudson Taylor} want to record my solemn conviction that not everyone who is a Christian, or thinks he or she is, will attain to that resurrection of which Paul speaks in Phillipians 3:11. Nor will everyone meet the Lord in the air. He will appear to those who by dedicated lives show they are not of the world but are looking for Him. 'He will appear...to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.' (Hebrews 9:28)"

  2. What a wonderful post! Thanks for sharing those quotations. :) I must put it on my to-read list. It sounds just like a lot of the Ellerslie reading material.
I recommend these two books. They are both short, but packed with Biblical truths (and beautiful illustrations).

Parables of the Cross - Lilias Trotter
Parables of the Christ Life - Lilias Trotter
